Embarking on a trail running adventure in the mountains is nothing short of exhilarating. To truly enjoy your journey with Tracks and Trails, packing smartly is key. Imagine yourself - well equiped and prepared - navigating rugged paths, ascending steep inclines, and descending into picturesque valleys.
Layered Clothing: The weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, ranging from warm, sunny days to chilly, windy conditions. Pack a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a waterproof, breathable outer layer. Think sun and rain!
Trail Running Shoes: Invest in a pair of good-quality trail running shoes with good traction and support. Ensure they are well broken in to avoid blisters. Read our view on the type of trail shoe here.
Accessories: Don't forget a cap or hat for sun protection, a buff or neck gaiter for wind and sun protection, and gloves for colder temperatures. Sunglasses with UV protection are also essential.
Hydration System: Staying hydrated is crucial, especially at higher altitudes. You can opt for a bladder or flask system, depending on your running vest. Ensure it has a capacity of at least 1.5 liters.
On long alpine days in the Bernese Oberland, where water sources can be spread out between high trails and valleys, a hydration bladder makes it easy to sip consistently as you move.
Nutrition: Trail running requires sustained energy. Pack energy gels, bars, dried fruits, nuts, and other high-energy snacks. Electrolyte tablets or powders can help replenish salts lost through sweat. Most days we are overnighting in a town and you will be able to buy some supplies. Your guide is the person to talk to as they will let you know about any shopping/resupply opportunities during your trip.
Safety Equipment: A lightweight, compact first aid kit is a must. Include bandages, antiseptic wipes, blister treatment, and any personal medications. A whistle, and safety blanket can also be life-saving in emergencies.
Communication Device: While mobile coverage can be spotty in the Alps, carrying a fully charged phone is recommended. Our guides always carry a satellite phone in case of emergency.
Running in the Alta Via in the Italian Dolomites , with its high passes and big mountain feel, is a great example of where smart safety gear gives peace of mind and keeps the group secure.
Sleeping Gear: If your trail running trip includes overnight stays in mountain huts or refuges, pack a lightweight sleeping bag or a sleeping bag liner. Some refuges provide blankets, but having your own liner ensures cleanliness and additional warmth.
Personal Care Items: Pack travel-sized toiletries including toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap, and wet wipes. A quick-drying towel is also useful.
Comfort Items: A change of clothes for evenings, a lightweight down jacket for warmth, and a small book or journal can make your stay more comfortable and enjoyable.
After a long day exploring the varied terrain of Mallorca's Serra de Tramuntana GR221, from limestone peaks to coastal paths, it’s a treat to change into comfortable evening clothes and relax before another day on the trails.
