EXPERT INSIGHTS WITH GUIDE LINDSAY AND DAVID ON THE CORSICAN GR20

The GR20, famously known as the Corsican Super Highway, isn't just a hiking trail—it's an adventure that calls to the daring and the bold. We’ve previously delved into the expertise of Lindsay, one of our seasoned guides. Now, we’re updating our insights with contributions from another experienced guide, David, to provide a comprehensive view of what you need to know before tackling this iconic route.

Essential Gear: What do You need for hiking the GR20

Lindsay emphasizes the importance of robust footwear: "Ensure your boots or mountain shoes have good tread," she advises. The trail is known for its rocky terrain, which can be tough on shoes. David adds that a 25-30 liter day pack is essential, capable of holding everything you need day to day, including 2-3 liters of water. "Rehydration sachets and electrolyte powder are also crucial," he notes. For a more comprehensive list of what to pack, check out our detailed blog post, which includes a full kit list tailored for the GR20.

Accommodations: Where's the Best Place to Stay?

"Il Croce is my top pick," Lindsay shares. "It offers more than just a bed—it’s a place to immerse yourself in the local culture. And nothing beats a sunset massage after a long day of hiking." David finds all the accommodations along the GR20 to be unique, each offering its own charm and character, making it hard for him to pick a favorite.

Scenery: What Will Hikers Experience?

"Prepare for awe-inspiring, rugged landscapes and crystal-clear river pools that are perfect for a refreshing dip," says Lindsay. The GR20 is a photographer’s dream, offering endless stunning vistas that captivate and challenge hikers. David adds to this by highlighting the variety of landscapes: "You’ll see summits and oceans, sunsets over granite mountains, alpine farms, and expansive pine forests. On clear days, you can even spot Sicily and the Italian coastline."

Local Cuisine: What Are the Must-Try Dishes?

Lindsay recommends diving into the local cuisine: "Don’t miss the brocciu cheese and the hearty civet de sanglier, a wild boar stew. These local dishes are not only delicious but also provide the necessary fuel for the trail." David agrees, emphasizing the importance of indulging in the rich, local flavors that Corsica has to offer.

Trail Difficulty: How Challenging is the GR20?

"The GR20 is notorious for its rocky paths and the intense Mediterranean heat. Proper hydration is crucial," Lindsay explains. "We provide expert advice on water management to ensure hikers stay safe and comfortable throughout their journey." David agrees, emphasizing that the trail is a serious trek: "Don’t expect manicured trails and gentle gradients. It’s rocky, steep, and technical, requiring a level of commitment and preparation. Training your ankles and legs on mixed and broken ground is key."

Unique Charms of the GR20

"What really sets the GR20 apart is its unique combination of rugged natural beauty and rich Corsican culture," says Lindsay. "The spirit of the locals is evident everywhere, from the way they embrace their heritage to the cows you might find lounging at local train stations!" David adds, "The 2000m+ mountains with the sea on either side are unparalleled in Europe. Corsica’s unique culture, fiercely proud and wild, matches the dramatic scenery. Learning a bit of the history and language enriches the experience."

Can You Run the GR20?

"Yes, you can run the GR20, but it's quite demanding," acknowledges Lindsay. "Runners should be in top physical condition and plan carefully for water, as carrying sufficient hydration is a challenge with lighter running gear." David suggests that while some sections are runnable, the trail is better suited for fast packing: "The runnable parts are memorable, but they’re linked by slow and technical sections. A ‘fast and light’ approach works best."

Expert Tips: What Should Every Hiker Know?

"Prepare thoroughly before your arrival and consider joining a guided tour," Lindsay suggests. "Our experienced team handles everything from navigating unpredictable weather patterns to ensuring you stay in bug-free accommodations." David emphasizes the importance of not rushing the experience: "Take time to enjoy the journey. If you can’t see it all in one visit, come back. Corsica isn’t going anywhere."

Choosing Your Route: North vs. South

"Each section of the GR20 offers a unique experience," explains Lindsay. "The North features scenic ridges and inviting river pools, while the South challenges with intense heat and offers dramatic views near Aiguilles de Bavella. Your choice will depend on the type of scenery and challenge you prefer." David concurs, noting that both sections have their unique challenges and beauties: "Both present their difficulties, but neither is significantly harder than the other. If you only have a week, consider returning next year to complete the trail."

With insights from both Lindsay and David, you’re now better equipped to tackle the GR20. This epic trail offers an unparalleled trekking experience through Corsica’s wild and stunning landscapes, enriched by the island’s unique culture and history. Lace up those boots, pack smart, and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime!
