Nordic Ski 'Fitness' Training

Price £899 or 1105€

Grade: Beginner

Sunday 18th Jan – Sunday 25th Jan 2009

So you walk, run, cycle or work out regularly but feel the effect of the winter blues? Try the art of cross country skiing to maintain and build that fitness level during the winter months. This week is designed to provide you with a chance to learn an excellent method of winter ‘cross-training’ by trying both skating and classic ski-styles. Arguably the most aerobic of sports, this low impact sport, is a great way to improve your fitness - at all levels.

Your days will be spent developing technique and as that develops we gradually build up the daily mileage and different training intensities to allow you to work at your fitness. Stretching will also be an important part of each day and to add to this a sports massage and Pilates class are also included to enhance your week of training. Not only will you experience 6 days of ‘personal training on skis’  but you will also experience the sense of freedom that cross country skiing provides and with ski tracks in a variety of terrains and locations it's a fabulous way to experience the Alps.

Day 1 Arrival in Chamonix Valley

We meet you at your hotel the evening you arrive to brief you on the days ahead and answer any questions.

Day 2 Introductory Day, Chamonix

Our morning is spent fitting our skis and taking the time to find our ski legs and looking at good technique. After lunch we re-visit those newly learned skills and develop them.  We finish the day with a ski, exploring the groomed tracks in the ChamonixValley.

Day 3 Argentière and Vallorcine – Sports Massage

We head towards the Swiss border to explore the hamlet of Vallorcine. We will revise our new skills and work on our technique. Our ski tracks take us through the village following the ancient stagecoach route. After a relaxing lunch looking across to the Swiss mountain vista we head back towards Chamonix to the village of Argentière to ski. In the afternoon we return to our chalet for a well deserved sports massage.

Day 4 Pilates Class – Skating Lesson

We begin the day with an energising class of Pilates. Pilates is an exercise method, designed to elongate, strengthen and restore the body to balance. After our class we will head out to ski and look at the skating style of cross country skiing.

Day 5 Megève, France

In one day we can visit up to four sites around the town of Megève linking small country villages and hamlets. Megève first came to fame when the Rothschild family opened the first major hotel in the village in 1921, after that it became the haunt of the rich and famous. Today it is quieter and an ideal spot to take time to try out the comprehensive cross country ski network using either classic/skating skis or both!

Day 6  Chamonix Valley

After consolidating our new found skills we pick the pace up for some ‘interval training’! To be embraced not dreaded…! This session is designed to raise the heart rate and burn some calories at what EVER level you are at. The afternoon is then free to either take a rest or go on a journey – you’ll be surprised as to how far you’ve come.

Day 7 Val Ferret, Italy

Today we travel into Italy. We head up the beautiful Val Ferret and ski the tracks through trees. The mountain views of jagged ridges, spires, and glaciers are stunning. We can explore up to 20km’s of tracks here! We lunch in a remote mountain chalet before returning to Chamonix for a final and well deserved final meal.
