Tour du Mont Blanc
Trekking the Tour du Mont Blanc
Spectacular walking in France, Switzerland and Italy
10 days
The Tour du Mont Blanc is one of Europe’s classic long distance Alpine treks, or Grandes Randonnews - a complete circuit of Mont Blanc the highest mountain in Western Europe while passing through three countries, France, Switzerland and Italy. Our tour starts in Chamonix, the mountaineering capital of the world, and begins a journey of discovery which takes in the history, culture, folklore and wildlife of the mountains. From remote farms and refuges, to ancient Roman towns and beautiful lakeside mountain villages - it's all there on the Tour du Mont Blanc.
- Professional guided walk
- Hike through 3 countries
- You choose the level of comfort
We have allowed 10 days to complete the circuit taking care that each of the stages represents a reasonable day’s walk and also ensuring that we have access to a good standard of overnight accommodation. There are many variations to this itinerary and if time is an issue then you may wish to consider a shorter trip where we can 'hike the highlights' over 6 days or over a weekend you can walk a 'demi TMB' or half a Tour du Mont Blanc where it's possible to walk through 3 countries in 3 days.
Luggage transportation is also possible for this trip.

Based on a series of ancient pathways used by hunters, herdsmen and traders, this classic long distance walk passes through some of the most breathtaking Alpine landscapes, crosses several high mountain passes, takes time out in pretty Alpine meadows and visits a succession of picturesque hamlets and villages. At the height of the summer, the trails are coloured by an abundance of wildflowers and alpine wildlife species, including chamois, ibex, marmot and golden eagle, are at their most visible. Our version of this justifiably popular trek starts out in the Chamonix Valley and crosses first into Italy and then into Switzerland.
This is a classic walking route on good trails. The average distance covered each day is around 15 kilometres (9.5 miles) and there is a fair amount of ascent and descent so this trip is suitable for regular hikers or those with a good level of fitness.

On the evening before we start our walk we will meet you at your hotel in the Chamonix Valley to brief you on the trip and answer any last minute questions.

Starting along a Roman road we make the long ascent through mountain pastures to the Col du Bonhomme, 2599m. Down through meadows to the tiny hamlet of Ferret where we catch a bus to the beautiful lake side village of Champex for the night. Ascent 770m.

Later in the day there are stunning views down to the Roman town of Martigny and the Rhône valley as we walk to the Col de la Forclaz for the night. Ascent 570m.
Day 8 Col de la Forclaz to Argentiere

Day 9 Argentiere to Chamonix
From the village we head up through the Nature Reserve to the famous Lac Blanc which provides a magnificent view of the Mont Blanc Massif, with its peaks and glaciers. Accommodation
On most nights we have several options of half board accommodation available to us. When enquiring please state which level of comfort and accommodation you would prefer. Prices vary accordingly. Choose from mountain lodges or a variety of hotels where single room supplements maybe available. The above itinerary uses rustic mountain lodgings with dormitory style accommodation. The dormitories are unisex and normally sleep 4 or more people often in non-segregated style bunk rooms. Showers are available each night. Lunches packs can be arranged each night at your accommodation or on some days there will be bakeries, supermarkets or small restaurants available along the route. At the Bonatti Rrefuge it may be necessary to use dormitory style accommodation, though we will aim to book twin rooms. We have suggested you spend a night here because of the wonderful character and history of the building which we think you would enjoy. However, the trip can also be arranged in such a way as to avoid dormitory accommodation.

Please note that you must have the appropriate insurance for your chosen activity. You must be covered for helicopter rescue, repatriation and medical costs. With regard to this please be sure you have read the Insurance section in our Terms and Conditions.

Please make enquiries for this additional cost.
